On the surface, Lisa seemed to have it all: a successful career, a loving family and a beautiful home. What Lisa’s family and friends didn't know was that she was the victim of physical, verbal and emotional abuse by her husband. For years, Lisa endured this abuse, which worsened as he grew more dependent on alcohol and prescription drugs. His threats kept her too terrified to seek for help. Lisa and her children suffered his abuse for nearly five years.
After a particularly brutal incident, Lisa realized that she needed to flee. With the help of the police, Lisa and her children were able to escape the only home they knew.
Lisa and her two young daughters were brought to reside at Julian’s Hope, one of three sites maintained by Episcopal Community Services serving women and children escaping domestic violence. While at Hope, Lisa sought counseling and case management to help her regain her life. Her daughters flourished in art therapy exercises, allowing them to understand and cope with the transition in their lives. With the help of Hope’s staff, Lisa changed her career path and was able to secure stable employment. Within eighteen months, Lisa and her two children had a brighter outlook on life and looked forward to a more independent, secure future.
