An Evening of Bach
featuring Anthony Newman

Hundreds fill St. James by-the-Sea for tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach

February 21, 2010
Even before the doors opened for early seating, eager concertgoers began to line up along the front steps of St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. "We're here early to get a good seat," admitted one patron. "Anthony Newman - it is a big deal he's here tonight."

Over 300 fans filled the rows of St. James to enjoy an organ recital commemorating the 260th death anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach. In lieu of purchasing tickets for admission to the performance, attendees were instead asked to make a contribution to Episcopal Community Services.

Newman, dubbed "the high priest of Bach" by musician Wynton Marsalis, did not disappoint those in attendance -- including a couple who drove from San Francisco just for the performance. His repertoire included Bach's Toccata Adagio and Fugue in C, Toccata and Fugue in D and Passacaglia and Fugue in C. Newman had barely concluded his last piece before patrons rose to their feet to applaud his performance.

For over 26 years, the multifaceted Anthony Newman has been in the public eye as one of the country's leading organ virtuosos and as a prodigiously active harpsichordist, fortepianist, conductor, composer, writer and recording artist.

Those in attendance generously donated over $5,000 to benefit Episcopal Community Services.
